A Diamond

They say a diamond is forever,
Precious, beautiful and rare,
Mined out of the earth,
Costly beauty you can wear.
But though a diamond be a gem,
A gem is cold and sharp,
And though precious it may be,
It could also pierce your heart.
So what truly is precious?
What is really beautiful?
Could anything so material
Be worth your heart and world?
If beauty lies so deep inside,
What does that make a diamond?
The inside isn’t lovely, it’s
A cold, hard lump of carbon.
A diamond is a dead thing,
But beauty lives inside.
A living, breathing spirit
That in dead things can’t reside.
If a diamond yet be beauty,
Then a diamond is not a stone.
So what then is this precious thing
If not that rock alone?
See you now, softly walking there
A girl passing through the rain.
She’s determined despite the hardship—
Despite the outside, she’s not plain.
See another, sobbing silently
Through pain you wouldn’t know.
She’s plastered in mud and misery
But her heart is white as snow.
That one there, her face is plain,
She looks like anyone else.
But there’s something shining through that face
That instead of seen is felt.
Some would call them ugly.
At best, they’re average girls.
Because no one looks at hearts these days
But just at lace and frills.
But step into that world of hers
And it won’t take long to see
She’s anything but commonplace.
This plain girl holds true beauty.
They say a diamond is forever,
That it is beauty set apart,
But I say that stone is not a diamond—
I say a diamond is her heart.
