Broken Wings
2-26-06

I stand on the shore, looking out at the sea
The wind’s in my hair, the salt air I breathe.
It’s a lie and I know it, but, all the same,
I want to believe that nothing has changed.
Last time I stood here, you held my hand,
And time flowed by us like waves on the sand
Passing us gently, so slowly, yet so fast,
Then before I knew it, our time together had passed.
The day feels the same, though memories are trying,
The air here is fresh, the sun is still shining,
But deep inside me, the world’s not alright—
I am battered and bruised by the cold of the night.
My heart is a boat being tossed out at sea
The storm of my life is climactic in me
I thought I could handle if you went away
But in the end, I wish you could stay.
I knew you were fading, and I was no stronger,
I could not bear to watch your suffering longer,
I gave you my heart, and you gave me yours,
And you died in my arms, right on these shores.
I thought that with time, all wounds would mend
But with tears flowing down, I am broken instead.
When we were together, I felt I could soar
Across the ocean, for eternity and more.
You took me there, up high in the sky,
To places I never knew that I could fly.
But how can I fly, now that you are gone?
My wings are shattered, and so is my song.
Slowly I rise and turn my back to the sea,
I wish you could heal my broken wings for me.
But though I am broken, I will go on;
Through tears and triumphs, I’ll sing a new song.
With your memory inside me, and a clear sky,
Maybe, just maybe, I’m still strong enough to fly.
I can’t stay here forever, where mournful bells ring,
For I can still cross the ocean on my broken wings.

I'll admit it--I ripped off Tomoko Tane's song "Broken Wings" a little. Just a little though. I heard the song "Broken Wings" because it is the ending theme for Trinity Blood, and though I don't like the singing much (Engrish, you know), I loved the melody, especially the chorus. And I thought the words in the chorus were awesome. The first part of the chorus goes, "My broken wings--still strong enough to cross the ocean with." That is what I copied. Everything else is mine. Not bad, you know, I only used a line from that song for inspiration for one line out of, what, 36? At any rate, if you get the chance, listen to the Trinity Blood closing theme "Broken Wings". I love it.
