Brothers
9-15-07

I know that we will meet again
Across that distant sea
And though we may be parted
You will ne’er be far from me.

You didn’t understand me
Nor did I understand you
But distance brings forth clarity
And time heals wounds

We fought in fits of passion
And never reconciled
I know the winds of time will bring
A tomorrow full of trials

But no matter what we said before
No matter what we did
We’ll always be together
Somewhere deep within.

That love you feel I understand
I hate the feeling too
We claim we hate each other
But inside we feel renewed

Maybe you never forgave me
Any more than I forgave you
But distance brings forth clarity
And time heals wounds

Your side and mine, so opposite
We’re alike yet not at all
You took your side, and I took mine
We must fight until we fall

We’ll likely never make amends
For we’ll never be at peace
We fought before we knew the truth
We have that thought, at least

Many years passed unknowing
And though we fell away
We were born as brothers
Forever from that day.

The idea was fraternal twin brothers who were separated at birth. They each were raised on separate sides of a cultural war, and when they finally meet as young men, they are enemies. They feel the connection with each other, and though they are shocked to find out they are actually brothers, somewhere deep inside they understand and they know. This is one brother's apology to the other; he knows that neither will ever give up his beliefs and therefore they will always have to fight, but he at least has to let his brother know that no matter what happens he will never deny their brotherhood.
