I have a heart of stone, condemned to death
The Medusa’s stare found me finally.
All life has left me, to my very breath.
I cannot recover what I used to be.
This process is slow, and merciless too,
That changes flesh to unmovable stone.
Once it starts, there’s naught you can do
The change will sink to your very bone.
From the core of your heart, and out from there,
The transformation hardens who you are.
This unwanted change is more than you can bear;
There is no one who can, near or far.
It found me many years past, and gradually
It’s taken over, and now to tell fact
This unfortunate truth, this mystery,
Once you are stone, there’s no changing back.
Look upon me, you who are turning,
You who are tempted to harden yourselves!
Look at this sad statue, of a man yearning
For freedom, yet like ornaments sitting on shelves
Is unable to change himself anymore.
No matter how much I long to return,
I can never be what I was before.
The memory of the past I wish I could burn.
Don’t waste my example, or disregard my shame.
Look at my sorrow, how I am alone!
The only consolation these dry tears can gain
Is if you heed the warning of my heart of stone.
