Oh Lady Fair of Brokenness
10-13-07

Oh lady fair of brokenness,
Eyes glistening like a light,
Your skin is white as falling snow
Your hair is dark as night.

Oh lady fair of brokenness,
Your beauty does amaze.
It’s lovely as a blushing bride
Though your foot is in your grave.

Oh lady fair, my lady dear,
Such locks as on your heart
Belong nowhere near you so fair
Near you so bright and dark.

Oh lady fair, your mystery
Is deeper than the seas.
Unfathomable, incalculable,
Beyond my darkest dreams.

But lady, know your grace and charm
Are naught but a charade;
With them you try to cover up
The fact you were betrayed.

Lady, you make it look easy
To ignore your hurt and shame
But I know you’ve not overcome it yet
I know you still feel the same.

Oh lady fair, your eyes betray
The scarring of your soul
And though outside you’re young as yet
Within you’re withered and old.

Oh lady, dying, broken, beat,
What man did this to you?
Who hated and abandoned you?
Who could have been so cruel?

Lady, wish I that you be mine
Despite your sorrow and your fear!
Could you believe in love, could you
Believe I hold you dear?

Oh lady fair of brokenness,
Why won’t you let me in?
Abandoned, must you always believe
That believing is a sin?

Oh lady fair of brokenness,
I wish that you would see
That long as you cling to your pain
You never can be free.

The idea was simple, really. Some people are beautiful on the outside, but dying within. Some people who you think have everything perfect are really broken. For this man speaking to his lady, love is not an emotion. Love is a choice, a challenge, an act. He wants to heal her because he loves her. She won't let him because she's been too hurt to believe in love anymore.
