Maybe It's Just Me

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think it’s funny.
People always pick on those who need a friend or two.
I don’t care if it’s clichéd, and I don’t care what you think.
You wouldn’t laugh so much if the joke was on you.
Everyone you see each day, everyone you meet,
Everyone who passes you is living, flesh and real.
Yet how many do we ridicule and push down in the halls?
How many times do we belittle what other people feel?
Just because it’s not real to you doesn’t mean it isn’t real.
Just because you don’t understand doesn’t mean they made it up.
Just because you think it’s dumb doesn’t mean you can disregard it.
Just because you don’t understand them doesn’t mean you can make fun.
Anorexia, bulimia, cutting, suicide, and more
These people here are hurting. They express it in this way.
I don’t care about your opinion—they’re people, they’re in pain.
You can’t flippantly make fun of them and say that it’s okay.
We’re supposed to be the light that leads the world ahead.
Yet we ostracize and criticize and call these people names.
We’re supposed to be the mirror reflecting love to dying men.
Yet those who need it most are those who most receive our blames.
Do teasing and name-calling help? Do they do a lick of good?
Do you not care how it hurts, or do you just not care to see?
All it does is make things worse and drive people away.
I don’t think it’s funny. But maybe it’s just me.

This one's me too. What a shock, I'm actually writing poetry from my own perspective. I was mad at my brother for making fun of certain kinds of people. I don't care if he makes fun of emos, but I do care if he makes fun of people who cut themselves. Maybe some people just do it 'cause it's a fad--I don't know. But I know enough people who have done it because of deep emotional pain that I don't think it's funny to laugh at them. I know it's human nature to laugh when someone gets hurt--but that doesn't make it right. And laughing at someone whose pain is on the inside hurts so much more than laughing at someone who crashed his bike.
