Never Give Up
A character composition for "Vaughn Xenon"
3-3-06

I will not give up, and you cannot make me.
It is not only for myself that I fight.
The people who gave their lives for me
Gave their blood for the cause that is right.
I see a crimson pool on the ground—
It is growing, but you haven’t conquered me.
Though the pain is more than I can bear,
I will fight as long as I have breath in me.
I see a flash of steel fall in front of me,
And another sword parries the blow.
Is that my own sword? My own hand?
It defends me and my mind doesn’t know?
The pain is sharp, as the edge of a sword
Yet somehow it still dulls my senses.
At least, while my mind is wandering,
My sword is still at its defenses.
Kyo, if I lose here, I want you to know
That because we’ve been friends all these years,
Remember, this is the choice that I made—
Don’t spend too much time in tears.
Alex, my friend with the gift of healing,
When I’m gone, I hope you’ll remain.
A broken body is not all you can mend.
You healed my heart, when I was in pain.
Isabella, although I’ve not known you long,
I have seen that your heart and your courage are strong.
Never give up and never lose hope,
And one day I’ll again hear your song.
Luna, I don’t know what I can say
That I haven’t already been trying to.
There are too many feelings I cannot express
So just remember that I love you.
It is not only for me that I fight my foe;
Three centuries hopeless is too long.
If I can return even a little of that hope,
Then I know that I must remain strong.
My skills are inferior, and it seems I have lost.
My blood flows down like a waterfall.
My mind is numb, but their faith is in me,
So I’ll never give up, I’ll keep standing tall.

Vaughn Xenon is the main character of a story I'm trying to write called "Wings of Destiny." He grew up with Kyo (which is pronounced "yo" with a k sound in front of it, not kee-yo) Kurokichi, best friends all their lives; he's known Alexander Galen since they was six and eight; he just met Isabella Lamiani; and Luna Reins, he hasn't known her much longer, but she's the female lead and love interest. I wrote this from the first time he fights the big villain (Lloyd--his last name is stupid, I'm going to change it, so I won't say what it is). Though at that point he has no idea he's in love with Luna. I dunno. Whatev. Whenever I write character compositions, I always take elements from a million different places in the story. At any rate, the first time he fights Lloyd, Vaughn is nearly killed and his sword is shattered. I kept the list of people he gives his farewells to (in his head as he's fighting) short; if I added people who a) weren't fighting beside him at that very moment or b) were fighting with him but didn't like him, the poem would grow very long.
