A Sea of Faces
10-9-09

Surrounded by a sea of people
A million nameless faces in the crowd
Happy, sad, indifferent
Expressions humble, blank, or proud
A smile, a laugh, a friendly word--
A few pierce the ambient noise.
One small act on this theatre stage
Where lives are built and destroyed.
Everyone lives on this set
In this sea of insignificant lives
Sink or swim, each finds his way
Some struggle, while some barely try
All wish to rise past the crowd
But the swelling tide carries us away.
Ambition drowns under the weight
And is lost in the vast, crashing waves.
All we want is to be seen
We want someone to turn around and notice
But even though we're surrounded
There's not a soul that's close to us
Drowning in a sea of faces
My voice is extinguished in the rough
If you turn your head and look at me,
Tell me, will it be enough?

I'm not sure what my inspiration for this one was. It, again, isn't exactly me; I think I was just musing to myself how tiny we are in the huge set of human lives.
